If you’ve got a spare ten minutes in your day, doing a hair mask might not be a priority. There’s TV to watch, snacks to eat, naps to be had. However, just like their facial counterparts, taking the time to hair mask once a week can make a big, shiny difference to your crowning glory.

You might already be doing everything right. Shampooing (but not too often), heat protecting, even scalp-serum-ing. But if after all that your hair is still suffering, a mask – working deeper to heal individual strands, smooth breakages and stimulate health – might do the trick.

‘Using a hair mask a couple of times a week can really help intensely condition, improve strength and help make hair more manageable,’ says Michael Shaun Corby, Global Creative Director for Living Proof. ‘I recommend a hair mask in place of your usual conditioner 2-3 times a week, and choose one that targets your hair concerns for the best results.’

ELLE’s Beauty Editors have rounded up their go-to masks, while the ELLE Beauty Lab has also put top brands to the test with their panel of over 600 testers, so you can find the mask for you – whatever your hair type or budget.

How the ELLE Beauty Lab tests

To find the most hydrating hair masks, ELLE’s beauty lab put 39 products to the test with the help of 681 panellists, all with a variety of hair types.

Our testers noted whether their hair felt more nourished and looked healthier after the two-week trial period, as well as any differences to the colour or frizziness of their strands.

Back in the lab, a Dia-Stron machine was used to assess the smoothness of hair swatches before and after treatment.
