The Emmy Awards 2022 Declared The Arrival Of The Modern Hollywood Bob

From ribbon-tied Bardot updos to smoky eyes plucked straight from the nineties, this year’s 74th Emmy Awards hosted a hard launch of gilded Hollywood beauty looks, all reimagined with a polished 2022 finish. That’s right, it’s in with the old and in with the new. Within the sea of muted waves and slicked-back buns, one hair trend reigned supreme: the glossy yet soft, modern Hollywood bob.

If you didn’t know already, bobs are officially back. The choppy and undone ‘boyfriend’ iteration, for example, has been coined one of autumn’s coolest haircuts. And can you blame us? Next to effortless, the look requires one crafty cut and a few spritzes of texture spray to look accidentally-on-purpose put together. For the red carpet however, dry shampoo and whispy waves were side-lined in favour of a contemporary twist on an old Hollywood classic.

What sets the modern Hollywood bob aside from its messy or retro counterparts is its more freeform finish, every strand intentionally placed and totally sleek, but with an effortless feel. Forget stiff set waves that took hours to pin in place, 2022’s take on the throwback bob leans into cloud-like swerves and curves. Its signature finish? Tips curled towards the chin or cheekbone, contouring the face without hiding it.

Elle Fanning’s curvaceous updo was among the most notable looks of the evening, her long blonde locks rolled up into a post-modern Marilyn-esque bob. ‘Elle’s inspiration for her hair was from a photo she found of a 1950s style she’s wanted to do for a while now – we’ve just been waiting for the right dress!’, make-up artist and hairstylist Jenda Alcorn explained via Instagram.

Squid Game actor HoYeon Jung and Maude Apatow also sported glamorous chin-length looks, the Euphoria star’s hair styled with a deep side part but updated with a barely there wave.

Notably, many of the stars showcasing the modern Hollywood bob didn’t actually brave the chop; Fanning and HoYeon Jung’s jaw-hugging updos were tactfully curved and pinned to disguise their naturally long lengths. Both faux bobs were defined by delicate accessories, Fanning’s hair sideswept with a dainty silver bow, while Jung’s hairstylist Jenny Cho opted for an ethereal middle-part placement for a floral sequinned hair piece that perfectly complemented the actor’s Louis Vuitton gown.

However, we’re not waving goodbye to the blunt cut bobs just yet. Alexandra Daddario and Issa Rae were also showcasing sleek, shoulder-brushing cuts, but theirs sharpened with a straight, simple finish. Elsewhere, Christina Ricci opted for a Mia Wallace style fringe.
