8 Ways to Fix Forza Horizon 4 Shuttering and FPS Drop Issue on Windows

Forza Horizon 4 is one of the best racing games to test your mettle against other racers. But while playing the game on Windows PC, you might encounter shuttering and low FPS issues. Both the problems result from misconfigured in-game settings and corruption in the system file.

Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to troubleshoot the problem. Just try the below solutions to get rid of the issue for good.

1. Disable the Game Bar

Game Bar is the graphical interface that helps you record gameplays, take screenshots, and save clips. But the app consumes a lot of system resources to do all these.

So, if you don’t care much about recording the gameplays, consider disabling this feature to get a better FPS in the game. You can do it by following the below steps.

  1. Open the Settings menu using one of the many ways to open the settings menu.
  2. Choose Gaming from the left pane.
  3. Click on the Xbox Game Bar option.
  4. Turn off the toggle next to the Enable Xbox Game bar.

Next, relaunch the game and check if you still face the problem.

2. Download the Latest Graphics Driver Update

A graphics driver, also known as GPU or video card, allows the OS and applications to use the system graphics hardware. To play graphics-centric games like Forza Horizon 4, you must download the latest computer graphics drivers to get the best performance from the hardware.

You can download the latest graphics driver update by following the below steps.

  1. Press Win + X hotkeys and choose Device Manager from the context menu.
  2. Double-click on Display adapters.
  3. Right-click on the installed graphics driver and select Update driver from the context menu.
  4. Click on Search automatically for drivers.

Now, wait until the update process is complete. Once done, reboot the system and check for the problem.

3. Close All the Memory Consuming Applications

One of the prime reasons behind low FPS and stuttering issues in any game, including Forza Horizon 4, are the background running applications. As it turns out, these applications eat up a lot of system resources.

After closing all these programs, the system will relocate the memory to the game, which will automatically increase its performance. You can close all the unnecessary background programs with the help of the Task Manager. Here’s how.

  1. Open the Task Manager using Ctrl + Shift + Esc hotkeys.
  2. In the Processes tab, right-click on all the memory-consuming applications like Microsoft Edge, and choose End task.

Along with the Task Manager, there are other ways to close background applications on Windows. You can check out the guide to close the program without the Task Manager.

4. Defragment the HDD

To get a faster and smoother experience on a Windows PC, it’s good to upgrade to a solid-state drive (SSD). But if you don’t have the money to upgrade, ensure that the HDD is defragmented.

Here are the steps to defragment the HDD.

  1. Press the Win key to open the Start Menu.
  2. Type defrag and press Enter.
  3. Right-click on the disk drive and choose Optimize.

Wait until the process is complete. You can even schedule the defragment process. By doing so, the drivers will be analyzed and optimized on a schedule cadence.

5. Change the Power Options

Windows allows you to change the power option per the machine’s energy consumption. By default, the power setting is set on the balanced mode, which gives equal importance to performance and battery. But to play graphics-oriented games like Forza Horizon 4, it is better to switch to the Best performance plan. Here’s how to do it.

  1. Open Settings > Power & battery.
  2. Click on the drop-down icon next to Power mode and choose Best performance from the menu.

6. Change the In-game Settings

Being a modern title, Forza Horizon 4 offers many options to increase the graphics quality and get a realistic gaming experience. But using high settings on a low-end PC can adversely affect the overall gaming performance.

So, to get a better FPS and eliminate the stuttering issue, consider playing the game on low settings. Here are the changes you need to make.

  • Dynamic Optimization – On
  • Dynamic Render Quality – Medium
  • FPS – Choose as per the refresh rate of the monitor.
  • Vertical Synchronization – Off
  • Full Screen – On

Next, switch to Advanced Settings and make the following changes.

  • Night Shadow – Off
  • Shadow Quality – Low
  • Motion Blur Quality – Normal
  • Environment Texture Quality – Normal
  • Static Geometry Quality – Medium
  • Dynamic Geometry Quality – Medium
  • MSAA – 2X
  • FXAA – Off
  • Shader Quality – Medium
  • Particle Effects Quality – Medium
  • Lens Effect – Medium
  • SSR Quality – Medium
  • Mirror Quality – High
  • Reflection Quality – Medium

7. Repair the Game Files

Forza Horizon 4 files can get corrupt or missing due to various reasons. And when this happens, you will encounter shuttering and low FPS problems in the game. As a solution, you will have to repair the game files. You can do it using Steam’s built-in repair utility.

Here are the exact steps you need to follow.

  1. Open the Steam client.
  2. Switch to the Library tab.
  3. Right-click on Forza Horizon 4 and choose Properties from the context menu.
  4. Select Local Files from the left pane.
  5. Click on Verify integrity of game files.

Steam will now look for and replace corrupt game files.

8. Run the Game With the Dedicated Graphics Card

It’s obvious to face shuttering and low FPS issues on Forza Horizon 4 if it runs on integrated graphics instead of a dedicated GPU. You must run the game on the dedicated GPU to solve the problem. Here’s how to do it.

  1. Open the Nvidia Control Panel.
  2. Choose 3D Settings from the left pane > Manage 3D settings.
  3. Switch to Program Settings.
  4. Click on Add.
  5. Select Forza Horizon 4 from the list and choose Add Selected Program.
  6. Click on the drop-down icon under Select the preferred graphics processor for this program and choose High-performance NVIDIA processor.
  7. Click on Apply.

Launch the game, and you will notice you’re getting comparatively better performance in the game.
