Apple Announces the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro: 5 New Features

Apple has finally taken the wraps off the long-awaited iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro at its “Far Out” September event, and we have so much to talk about.

Although the standard iPhone 14 looks like last year’s model, we also get a newer, bigger “Plus” variant while losing the mini version. However, Apple saved the most significant changes for its top-of-the-line Pro models.

So, are you ready to see what’s new in Apple’s latest iPhone lineup? Here are the six new features we can’t wait to get our hands on.

1. The Pill Replaces the Notch

Apple introduced the notch all the way back in 2017, and although many have come to accept it, most were waiting for Apple to finally ditch this design and put a hole-punch or under-display camera on their phones.

Unfortunately, the standard iPhone 14 models retain the previous generation’s look, with the small notch housing the front camera, Face ID, and other sensors. However, the iPhone 14 Pro model finally drops the notch. But Apple’s engineers also didn’t go with a hole-punch or under-display camera.

Instead, they went with a pill design called Dynamic Island. This design houses the selfie camera, the Face ID sensor, and the proximity sensor. Furthermore, iOS 16 best utilizes the pill-shaped Dynamic Island for your notifications and activities, allowing you to have a seamless experience across the board.

2. Improved Camera System

As with every generation of the iPhone, we expect incremental improvements with the iPhone 14. True enough, we get a larger primary sensor for both the vanilla and Pro models. The standard iPhone 14 models get larger pixels while maintaining the megapixel count of the last generation. However, the iPhone 14 Pro gets a larger sensor and more megapixels—up to 48 MP for the primary camera.

Although the front camera retains the same sensor size and megapixel count, Apple gave it a bigger aperture for better low-light performance. It also now sports autofocus, allowing you to have tack-sharp selfie images, no matter how close or far you are from it.

Furthermore, both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro features an improved Cinematic mode, allowing you to capture video in 4K at 30 fps or 4K at 24 fps. They also get Action Mode, giving you gimbal-like stability even if you’re recording handheld video.

3. New Safety Features

If you have the Apple Watch Series 7, you’re probably familiar with safety features like fall detection and the heart rate sensor. However, you don’t have any features like these on the iPhone. That is, until now.

That’s because, with the iPhone 14, you now get Crash Detection. Whether you’re using the standard iPhone 14 or the iPhone 14 Pro, the phone can detect if you get into a hard collision. It will then automatically connect to emergency services and send your location. Although this service is already available with OnStar’s Guardian app, the iPhone 14 has dedicated hardware that allows it to be more accurate in its detection.

Another groundbreaking feature of the iPhone 14 is the Emergency SOS via Satellite. This allows the iPhone to connect directly to satellites in case of emergency. That way, you can contact emergency services even if you don’t have cellular coverage. The phone will even automatically send the information needed to locate and rescue you.

According to Apple, this service is free for the first two years of its launch. That means Apple could charge for it in the future. But in the meantime, it’s free to use for every owner of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro.

4. A More Powerful Processor

If you’re getting the iPhone 14 Pro, you’ll be pleased to know that it packs a world-class A16 Bionic chip built on a 4nm process, allowing better efficiency while delivering more power. In fact, Apple claims that it has the fastest chip ever in a smartphone, claiming that the A16 is 40% faster than the competition.

For whatever reason, Apple decided not to equip the standard iPhone 14 with the A16 chip. Instead, it gets the same A15 Bionic chip from last year as the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro models.

5. No More SIM Trays (in the US)

The iPhone 14 is also the first generation of the iPhone that will ditch the SIM card tray, at least in the US. With the eSIM, you no longer have to fiddle around with a physical card that contains your network information. Instead, it’s now sent remotely and stored on your phone.

Switching carriers now happen instantly—you no longer need to wait for a replacement SIM card. It’s also a lot safer. That’s because if you lose your phone, there’s no more risk of someone taking your SIM card, inserting it into another device, and pretending it’s you.

The iPhone 14 Is Both an Evolution and a Revolution

With the iPhone 14, we get both evolutionary upgrades and revolutionary new features. For example, although the iPhone’s cameras are considered one of the best, they don’t offer anything groundbreaking, as other top-tier Android devices have similar features.

However, its groundbreaking safety features, like emergency satellite communication via smartphone and crash detection, and the way Apple embraced the eSIM, could lead other manufacturers to do the same.
