Does the iPhone 13 Have eSIM? Here’s What You Should Know

When the iPhone 14 launched, it was the first iPhone to be eSIM only. For those who don’t know, eSIM is a convenient technology that makes it easy to set up a phone without having to insert a physical SIM card.

Unlike CDMA phones, eSIM devices can have multiple carriers on one phone. This is great for those who travel or want a business line on the same device.

So, if you want to know more about the iPhone 13 and if it has eSIM, this article will help clear things up.

Does the iPhone 13 Have eSIM?

Many people are aware that the iPhone 14 is eSIM only. But what about the iPhone 13?

The answer is yes; the iPhone 13 does have eSIM support. Since the iPhone XS, all iPhones have come with eSIM as a standard option.

You can transfer a physical SIM or eSIM from an older iPhone to your iPhone 13 as long as both devices run iOS 16.

Do You Need eSIM for the iPhone 13?

While the iPhone 13 is eSIM compatible, it’s not required. The iPhone 14 is the only eSIM-only iPhone at the moment. Future models may be eSIM-only, too—at least in the United States.

However, the iPhone 13 is still SIM-compatible. So, as long as you have a SIM card slot, you can use a physical SIM card with your iPhone 13.

How to Use an eSIM on Your iPhone 13

Since eSIM is relatively new, many people might think that setup is difficult. Luckily, it’s incredibly easy.

First, all you need is an eSIM-compatible network plan. Most networks are now eSIM compatible. If you’re looking for an affordable eSIM network, consider Mint Mobile.

Once you have an eSIM-compatible plan, get your eSIM details from the network. You will most likely get these during setup. If you don’t, be sure to ask.

After all, it never hurts to ask, and you can set up days quicker than you could with a physical SIM card. All you need from your network is a QR Code.

Add eSIM to Your iPhone 13

Once you have an eSIM-compatible QR Code or the details, open the Settings app on your iPhone 13 and head to Cellular > Add eSIM.

Once here, you can select the on-screen options to set up an eSIM on your iPhone. You can either scan your provided QR Code or transfer the details from a nearby device.

Before setting up an eSIM on your iPhone, make sure you’re connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Once you scan the code or enter the details, your iPhone will get routed over to that eSIM carrier. And if you add a second carrier to your iPhone, you can call, text, and use data from both plans at your discretion.

Should You Use an eSIM on Your iPhone 13?

While the iPhone 13 supports eSIM, it isn’t eSIM-only. You can still use a physical SIM card if you want. But that begs the question—should you use an eSIM if you don’t have to?

While it is a newer technology, and some might be skeptical, using an eSIM for your iPhone 13 is safe and more convenient. Not only can you access multiple carriers when traveling, but you can also switch to a new carrier without ever leaving your house. You won’t even need to wait for a SIM card in the mail.

So yes, if you have the option to use an eSIM, you should, as it’s more convenient. However, the network speed and plan will be the same as you expect with a physical SIM card.
