How Many Users Does Spotify Have?

Spotify is a Swedish music streaming company that was founded in 2006. From its inception, the company has since expanded to more countries worldwide. As of writing, Spotify is available in 183 countries across South America, North America, Europe, and more.

But do you know how many people use Spotify? If not, this article will provide the nitty-gritty from the number of total Spotify users to the specific number of paying subscribers.

How Many Users Does Spotify Have?

According to Spotify’s earnings report to investors, the streaming service had 433 million monthly active users. The streaming giant added 10 million subscribers during the second quarter of 2022. However, not every user is a paying subscriber since, unlike Apple Music, Spotify has a free, ad-supported tier.

Of the 433 million users, only 188 million have a Spotify subscription. That’s less than half the total, but it’s not surprising since not everyone can afford to add yet another subscription to their monthly expenses in the current age of ballooning subscriptions. A common way to save money on digital subscriptions is using free resources as much as possible.

The same report also highlights that the number of ad-supported users on the platform stood at 256 million. During the quarter, the company added 6 million net paying subscribers, slightly larger than the 4 million users on the free tier.

Spotify first hit the 400 million mark in the fourth quarter of 2021 after adding a whopping 25 million users.

Spotify is the first choice for many due to various reasons. Chief among them are the available features and extensive music and podcast catalog. Spotify is also available across different devices, including via the web, making it easy to stream music regardless of your platform.

Additionally, its free tier is attractive if you can’t afford to pay for the premium plan—as long as you can put up with the advertisements. While there are reasons why you may not want to use Spotify, most of the advice doesn’t apply to everyone.

Is Spotify the Right Music Streaming Service for You?

If you care about having an extensive music library and the ability to stream across devices, even for free, Spotify is your best bet. However, if you’re an audiophile that cares a lot about music streaming quality, look elsewhere because the platform lacks lossless streaming quality.

As of writing, Spotify’s highest quality tops out at 320kbit/s, which is one of the most significant downsides of the service. Spotify’s competitors, Tidal, Deezer, and Apple Music, support lossless streaming.
