You can change regions on your Nintendo Switch to help expand your gaming experience. Here’s how you do it.

Changing your region on your Nintendo Switch lets you play cartridges from other regions and purchase region-locked games from the Nintendo eShop.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to change the System Region on your Nintendo Switch and how to purchase games from a different eShop region.

Why Should I Change Regions on My Nintendo Switch?

You can choose from one of the following regions on your Switch.

  • Japan.
  • The Americas.
  • Europe.
  • Australia/New Zealand.
  • Hong Kong/Taiwan/South Korea.

Changing your region on your Nintendo Switch is a different process depending on what you want to do. If you want to play a game bought in another country (e.g. If you bought Breath of the Wild in Japan) then you’ll need to change your region via the settings menu. This is the only way to play games bought in another region.

If you want to browse the eShop in another region to play region-locked games, or access regional discounts to save money on Switch games, you’ll need to create another Nintendo account and link it to a new profile on your Switch. You cannot switch between eShop regions within the same user account.

How to Play Switch Cartridges From Other Regions

These steps will show you how to change your region to play cartridges from another region on your Switch. You will need to restart your console after changing your region. If you wish to browse the eShop in another region, skip to the next section.

  1. Open the Home menu on your Nintendo Switch.
  2. Open the System Settings menu at the bottom-right of your screen.
  3. Scroll down and select the System menu.

  4. Scroll down the options on the right side of your screen, and select Region.
  5. Select a region.

  6. Accept the End-User License Agreement by selecting Accept.
  7. Click Restart.

You’ll need to follow these steps every time you wish to play a cartridge from another region.

How to Browse the Nintendo eShop From Another Region

There are two steps to this section. First, you’ll need to create a new Nintendo account from the Nintendo website. Once you’ve done this, you’ll need to add a new user to your Switch.

We’ve included the basic steps for this below, but for a detailed walkthrough, follow our guide on adding a new profile to your Nintendo Switch.

  1. Open the HOME menu on your Nintendo Switch.
  2. Open the System Settings menu at the bottom-right of your screen.
  3. Scroll down and select the User menu.

  4. Select Add User from the options on the right side of your screen.
  5. Select Create New User.

  6. Select a user icon, and create a name.
  7. Select Sign In and Link to connect your new Nintendo account to this user.

When you open the eShop on your Switch, you’ll be prompted to choose one of your user accounts. If you’re just using this account to purchase games, we recommend naming the account after that region, so you won’t be confused about which account is linked to which region.

Access Nintendo Switch Games From Every Region

You are now able to access and play Switch games from other regions. While you can access most games from most regions, there are a few that are only available in each.

However, the Switch has limited storage, so if you download too many games you may need to expand it.
