How to Use Quick Replies With Your Ring Video Doorbell: A Beginner’s Guide

If you remember the days of the telephone line answering machines, you may be interested to know that the technology is back—sort of. If you have a compatible Ring Doorbell, a similar technology is available for anyone who visits your front door.

We’ll take a closer look at Quick Replies and how you can use the feature.

What Are Ring Video Doorbell Quick Replies?

With a smart Ring Video Doorbell, you can communicate with somebody who comes to your front door via video chat on your smartphone.

Ring offers a new feature called Quick Reply which responds with a preselected message and allows the visitor to leave a message.

For example, an Amazon delivery person rings the bell, and the Ring device says “Please leave the package outside. If you’d like to leave a message, you can do it now.”

How to Set Up Quick Replies

Turning quick replies on and off is quick and easy in the Ring app for iOS or Android. It works on most Ring models, although it doesn’t work on the first-generation Ring Video Doorbell.

  1. At the Ring App home screen, tap the three stacked lines in the upper left.
  2. Tap Devices.
  3. Tap your Ring doorbell device.
  4. Tap Smart Responses.
  5. Tap ENABLE FEATURE.
  6. Or, if the feature is already enabled, tap Smart Responses.
  7. Under Quick Replies, tap the slider button to toggle on quick replies.
  8. Tap Response Time if you’d like to set the delay between pressing the doorbell and the quick reply.
  9. Tap Quick Reply Message to select your default message.

Trying Out Your Ring Doorbell Quick Replies

The quick reply voice sounds a bit like Amazon’s Alexa, but it can’t be customized. You can’t record your own message like you could with a telephone answering machine.

The default messages aim to cover the reasons someone might come to your door. If solicitors visit you often, you can have it say “Sorry, we’re not interested.” If a flower delivery person rings the bell, the Ring device can say, “Hi! We’ll be right there.” And no, there is no beep like there was with an answering machine.

You can interact with the person through the Ring app, including while they’re leaving a message. You can also manually select a quick reply. This might be good if, for example, your neighbor is stopping by to say hello, and you don’t want the doorbell to automatically say “Sorry, we’re not interested.”

Just to note, Ring Doorbells can be linked to Alexa. The Quick Reply feature is built into the Ring app, but you can also enable added functionality with Alexa. So you could have Alexa answer your door, and interact with Alexa to control the Quick Replies.

Added Options With a Ring Subscription

You don’t need a subscription to use quick replies but without it, you have to view your visitor’s message while they are leaving it. Otherwise, it’s lost forever. There is a possible workaround to this issue in the ability to record Ring Doorbell video without a subscription.

If you have a subscription, you can view the recorded message along with any of your other recorded videos on the Ring device.

To view your recorded message:

  1. At the Ring App home screen, tap the three stacked lines in the upper left.
  2. Tap Devices.
  3. Tap your Ring doorbell device.
  4. Tap Event History.
  5. Tap the Quick Replies event under your Recent Activity list.

Quick Replies Helps Make Answering Your Ring Doorbell Even Easier

If you’re busy, not home, or if you just don’t want to talk to people, your Ring doorbell can act as a middleman to visitors.

You may want a Ring subscription to make the most of the feature. If you’re nostalgic for the days of answering machines, you may enjoy the Quick Reply feature on your Ring Video Doorbell.
