The 3 Best Commercial EV Vans

EVs are taking over the car scene, and it’s not only regular vehicles and SUVs; commercial vehicles are also getting electrified. Industry giants like Amazon are doing everything in their power to make their enormous fleets more sustainable. To this end, Amazon is purchasing electric vans from Rivian with the hope of making their gargantuan delivery fleet greener.

Ford and GM are also rolling out commercial electric vans that will help fuel the EV revolution in different sectors. So, what are the best EV vans on the market?

1. Ford E-Transit Van

The E-Transit all-electric van starts at $46,295. This workhorse EV can be configured in many ways, with three roof heights and three body lengths. The E-Transit is clearly aiming to take over the competitive commercial van segment, and they’re not cutting any corners with their electric offering.

The fact that you can order Ford’s electric van with distinct roof heights and body lengths clearly indicates Ford is committed to offering its full van experience to customers who are interested in an EV alternative.

Ford calculated that the average commercial van travels approximately 74 miles daily; thus, they designed the E-Transit van (the cargo van low-roof model) with 126 miles of range. However, 126 miles of range is not impressive, especially considering you can currently purchase a family sedan EV with 400+ miles of range.

So, a huge van with seemingly endless space for batteries offering 126 miles of range is slightly disappointing, but this will be improved upon. The E-Transit does have many features, such as the available Pro Power Onboard, which allows you to power your electric tools wherever you go.

The E-Transit is spacious, with the highest roof version able to accommodate someone up to 6’9″ standing up in the cargo area. The E-Transit Cargo Van also offers up to 3,880 lbs of payload capacity, with the cutaway model offering an impressive 4,428 lbs.

2. BrightDrop Zevo 600

Ok, so if you thought the Ford E-Transit was lacking, you’ve come to the right place. The BrightDrop Zevo 600 (GM’s commercial van venture) will go the distance with 250 miles of range. That is absolutely amazing, especially for such a big and bulky vehicle.

And the fact that it goes about twice the distance between charges as Ford’s offering is probably not a coincidence. The futuristic van also looks much better than Ford’s ancient-looking design. The BrightDrop Zevo is no slouch either. It features 300 all-electric horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. The van is also AWD for peace of mind in all weather conditions.

In terms of cargo capacity, which is the whole point of a cargo van, the BrightDrop also has you covered. The van features a gargantuan 600+ cu-ft of storage, combined with 2,200 lbs of payload capacity. It features a cargo area that’s 82 inches high and 83.68 inches wide. Another great thing about the BrightDrop is the fact that its steps are not insanely high off the ground, thanks to its electric powertrain. The Zevo 600 features a step height of only 15.49 inches.

The BrightDrop Zevo promises to save companies a lot of money normally used for refueling diesel cargo vans, and its great range presents the potential to charge it every other day. There are also tons of standard safety features on the BrightDrop Zevo, such as front pedestrian braking and automatic emergency braking.

3. Rivian Amazon Delivery Van

Rivian is one of the most innovative companies currently building EVs (they’re basically what Tesla used to be). Not only does Rivian build one of the coolest EV pickups on sale, but they also build a custom delivery van for Amazon that is impossibly cool. The other vans on this list are mostly electric versions of the standard delivery van that has been around forever. But, Rivian takes this van one step further.

They’ve designed this van from the ground up to suit Amazon’s specific needs and to make it as user-friendly and accommodating for the driver as possible. Amazon drivers will spend tons of time behind the wheel of these vans, and Rivian has truly thought of everything. Even the way the driver enters the van has been carefully engineered by Rivian to be safe and second nature to the driver.

The entry contact points have all been engineered with the driver’s safety in mind, with handles that help the driver pull himself up into the van and anti-slip floors that prevent nasty falls. The interior is an ergonomic masterpiece built around the driver, ensuring the job is performed as efficiently as possible. Because the van shares much of its architecture with Rivian’s R1T and R1S, the infotainment system is very similar to those vehicles but with Amazon-specific software.

The van also features throne-like seats that are heated and cooled, ensuring the driver is left feeling fresh at all times. Rivian also added an automatic door that divides the cargo compartment from the driver’s area. This door opens automatically when the driver makes a stop, and it can close automatically as well.

Another interesting feature of the van is that it features dual motors but is front-wheel drive. This is presumably done to make the vans more efficient. Basically, Amazon delivery vans don’t need to be as rugged as the tech-filled Rivian R1T; thus, they can do without AWD.

More EV Vans Are Set for Launch

EV commercial vehicles are on the way. However, the EV vans listed in this article are just the beginning, especially because corporations are constantly trying to save money.

An EV fleet guarantees that companies will save tons of money by eliminating fuel costs, especially if they can find a way to implement renewable energy to charge their fleet. It’s a truly exciting time as we transition to electric everything, especially taking into consideration that big trucks and planes might soon be electric as well.
