Which Music Streaming Service Is Better?

With so many streaming services available on the market, how can you know which one is the best for you?

We’ve decided to take on the task of comparing two leading platforms — Spotify and Deezer — to help you come to your own conclusions.

Spotify vs. Deezer: Price Comparison

While both services have a free version you can use, it’s usually not enough for the true music lover.

With the free subscription, you’ll be interrupted by ads every few songs, have a limited number of skips, won’t be able to download songs to listen offline, and other annoying limitations.

Luckily, both Deezer and Spotify offer a variety of subscription plans with different price points. The price for an individual subscription is the same for both services, while you can also save on premium subscriptions by choosing group plans. Look at the table below to see each platform’s subscription plans.

Type of Subscription Spotify Deezer
Individual $9.99/month $9.99/month
Family (6 accounts) $15.99/month $14.99/month
Duo (2 accounts) $12.99/month No such option
Student $4.99/month $4.99/month
HiFi No such option $14.99/month
Annual price $8.25/month when paid with a $99 gift card you can buy on Amazon. $7.49/month when paid annually.

And the Winner Is: It’s a Tie

As you can probably tell, the prices only have slight differences. This means that you should base your selection on the quality of the platform, which we’ll discuss next.

Spotify vs. Deezer: Mobile App Interface

Both platforms have desktop and mobile apps available. However, as many people like to listen to music on the move, we’ll focus on the mobile interface in this comparison.

We’ll start with Spotify. The first thing on your home screen is recently played for easy access to songs you enjoy listening to. The rest of the page is tailored to your preferences, with suggested podcast episodes, daily mixes according to music you like, mixes for different moods, trending music, and more.

It is a good mix of songs you already like, and the option to discover new music, all with a simple tap. If you want something specific, you can go to the search page, which also shows your top genres, new releases, and personalized playlists.

In Your Library, you can see everything you liked or followed and filter by Playlist, Artists, Albums, Podcasts, or Downloaded.

Finally, you’ll see the cover art when you listen to a song. You can like to add it to a dedicated playlist or dislike it to never hear it again. If you scroll down, you can also read the lyrics.

Now let’s view Deezer. The home screen is pretty similar and, like Spotify, changes according to your use. The first thing you see is Recently Played, followed by Made For You, which are tailored playlists. Next, there are recommended playlists, new releases for you, etc.

The equivalent to the Spotify Library is Favorites. This is where you’ll see your Recently Played, Downloads, and Liked songs.

Unlike Spotify, here you can hit Shuffle on all the songs you’ve downloaded or favorited. This means you don’t have to create a dedicated playlist to listen to everything you like at once.

As for the song page, Deezer also shows song lyrics, and you have the option to set up a sleep timer.

And the Winner Is: Deezer

The interface feels more tailored and personalized. Also, Spotify lacks the option to listen to everything you like at once.

Personalized Playlists & Music Discovery

We’ve already touched on this in the previous point, but let’s dig deeper. While Deezer’s home page looks slightly more personalized, in fact, both platforms excel in their playlists and suggestions.

Spotify has Daily Mix, Discover Weekly, Release Radar, as well as Artists, Genre, Mood, and Decade Mixes. Deezer has multiple daily mixes, as well as Monday Discovery, Sunday Chill, and Flow.

Both also recommend playlists, new artists, and music by mood and genre, which helps you discover new music. The one main difference is Deezers Flow mix, which keeps going indefinitely, and can be modified in real-time based on your preferences.

And the Winner Is: Deezer

All-in-all, both platforms are great at this point, but the Flow playlist takes Deezer a bit further.

Spotify vs. Deezer: Content Library

There is an endless supply of music available on both services. In fact, it’s about 50 million songs each. Both have a good combination of popular and indie, mainstream and underground, as well as unsigned musicians. The main difference is when it comes to exclusives.

Both platforms offer exclusive content called Deezer Originals and Spotify Singles. The difference is because Spotify is more popular, it has a larger selection of exclusives from bigger names.

And the biggest difference is in the podcasts. Spotify is notorious for making an exclusive deal with Joe Rogan, but he’s not the only one. Other huge names like Michele Obama, Kevin Bacon, and Dax Shepard make Spotify the go-to for podcasts.

And the Winner Is: Spotify

The music selection is bigger by a margin, and nothing can beat the podcasts library.

Spotify vs. Deezer: Available Features

Both apps share some similar features, such as the lyrics and the built-in equalizer. Both also offer fun listening statistics at the end of the year, in the form of Spotify Wrapped and #MyDeezerYear. You can also make playlists with your friends on both platforms.

So what’s unique to each streaming service? Deezer, for one, has a built-in version of Shazam called SongCatcher. The platform also supports spatial audio technology that offers realistic 360-degree audio, making Deezer one of the best music streaming services for audiophiles.

Spotify, however, has a strong social element, where you can follow what your friends are listening to in real-time. There are also many ways to share your Spotify playlists.

In addition, Spotify allows for a crossfade between songs. But Deezer has the option of transferring songs and playlists from 16 other platforms.

And the Winner Is: It’s a Tie

Both platforms have various small features that it doesn’t make that much of a difference either way.

Which Streaming Platform Is the Best?

If we tally the wins for each section, Deezer is the winner. However, it is only by a small margin and not enough to make a difference.

Our suggestion is to read through the sections and locate the features that are most important to you. These will determine which platform you should invest your money in. Fortunately, you can try both platforms for free, so you can always change your mind later.
